Sight tests by opticians are essential for elderly people because eyesight deteriorates as we get older. These free eye tests can identify potential eye conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts that need treatment by an ophthalmologist or eye specialist. They also ensure that older person who is visually impaired receives the correct glasses for their sight. Spectacles can have varifocal or bifocal lenses for older people who have both long and short distance sight impairment. Some opticians provide a domiciliary visiting service for the housebound. People who are blind or partially sighted can access support and care services as well as special aids and equipment to help them remain independent.
