Housing and support for people with dementia

Housing and support for people with dementia

Dementia is the term used for a group of symptoms that can affect the memory and lead to mood changes and difficulties with communication and reasoning. There are different types of dementia. The most common is Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. It is a progressive condition which means the symptoms gradually get worse over time. It predominantly, but not exclusively, affects older people.

Early diagnosis can determine if drugs can help to delay the impact of the condition. It can also help people to live positively with dementia by considering their options in relation to their housing, care, support, health and general wellbeing.  For relatives and carers this can be a difficult time and they will want to ensure that the person is able to be supported to make the best decisions for them as their condition develops. Knowing what is available is a good start.

This page provides links to the key resources available for those who support people with dementia to help them to consider if their home circumstances are suitable now and for the future. It is intended for carers and professionals.
