Show more "It was Mrs Marjorie Ellen Field whose vision for a MHA presence in York was the driving force behind this Scheme. The land was donated by the family of William and Eliza Collinson, who were members of Acomb Methodist Church. Surrounded by a large garden with trees, the Sheltered Housing complex comprises a mix of flats designed for single residents and couples. The Scheme was opened in October 1991.Field Court is a community with tenants currently ranging in age from 60s to over 100, including one couple who marked their 70th Wedding Anniversary in 2007. They all speak of the security, independence and comradeship that Field Court offers them.
Field Court lies in one of the oldest areas of York and near to Heworth Methodist Church. The congregation hosts coffee mornings, and the church building is a meeting place for the Field Court Support Group.
The Scheme recently celebrated, for example, the ten years over which one volunteer, Mr Les Battams, has been contributing to the life of the Scheme. It was evidence that the local community have maintained the same level of involvement that enabled the project to be built in the first place and which now adds to the residents’ overall quality of life."
