Exercise and Sing Along

The aim of the session is to provide physical and mental stimulation. The exercises mainly focus on stretching, mobilisation of joints and mild cardiovascular stimulation. Residents are asked to remain seated for safety. They are also asked to only do what they are comfortable with. I usually begin with exercises for about 30 to 40 minutes. We start with gentle warm up exercises then move on to slightly more vigorous movements. We also do some ball throwing and bouncing. When possible I encourage interaction between participants. Between exercises I try to engage in short discussions. This helps to build rapport and gives mental and social stimulation whilst allowing for a short rest for recovery. As far as possible I tailor the exercises to suit the requirements and abilities residents present. After the exercises I give out percussion instruments, to those that wish to use them, and we sing a few songs together. If I feel it is appropriate I may make alterations to the order or timings of the session to suit the requirements of the participants.
