Disabled Facilities Grants

grants for home improvments and adaptations

What does it do?

If you’re disabled, and need to make improvements to your home, you may be able to get a grant from Lambeth Council. The grants are awarded to help adults and children with disabilities live as independently as possible.

Possible improvements can include:
- widening doors and installing ramps
- improving access to rooms, by installing a stairlift for example
- improving facilities, such as creating a downstairs bathroom
- providing a suitable heating system
- adapting heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use.

A Disabled Facilities Grant won’t affect any benefits you currently receive.

Assessments

Initial assessments are carried out by the community Occupational Therapy (OT) service either in Children's or Adults Community Services. The OT will visit the disabled person and assess the work needed. A referral is then made to the Home Improvement Agency (HIA).

An HIA case manager will visit the disabled person at home. They will make a financial assessment (a 'means test') and advise the disabled person if they will need to contribute to the cost of the work.

How much will the grant be

The amount of financial assistance offered can vary from nothing to 100% of the cost, depending on the results of the financial assessment.

Currently, the maximum grant is £30,000 (less any assessed contribution). In exceptional cases a top-up discretionary Disabled Facilities Grant might be available.
