Learning for the Fourth Age

Adult learning, interests and hobbies, one to one and small group.

What does it do?

We provide volunteer learning mentors who will help you to continue learning and enjoying interests and hobbies what ever your age or health.

All our learning mentors are DBS checked and given support and training.  They will plan your session according to your individual needs and the subjects you enjoy.

We are currently providing sessions in many different area including art, history, literature and poetry, film, life history, reminiscence, languages and current affairs.  We are not limited to only these subjects and our volunteers love exploring new areas of interest too!

An added benefit of our service is that there is a chance to build friendships as well, often with someone of a younger generation.

Who it is for?

Any older person who needs help to remain independent or is receiving care.

Where it is available?

Local service (Harborough, Hinckley & Bosworth, Leicester, Melton, Blaby, Charnwood, North West Leicestershire, Oadby & Wigston, Rutland).

What it costs:

We are a not for profit organisation and try to keep our costs as low as possible. Our one to one sessions are £8.00 per session (a session is between 1-3hours).  Small groups can share the cost.  The charge ensures that we can provide the resources for the session and pay the volunteers expenses.  We have 'Gift of Learning" vouchers which you purchase for the number of sessions you would like (usually between 2-10 at a time) and these are available for friends and relatives to buy as a gift too.

How to access or apply for it:

This service is available throughout Leicestershire.  Please contact us via the phone numbers included with this advert, or via our email or website.

What to expect then:

Having made contact you can expect a visit from the project co ordinator or a colleague who will meet you, hear a little bit about you or the person who will be receiving the service and what you would like from the sessions.  We will make a record of this visit so that we can match you with a volunteer who has similar interests to you.  You can ask questions at this visit and there is no obligation to go further or need for payment at this point.

We will then arrange to visit again and introduce the volunteer as well as discuss payment for the sessions.

Additional information:

We are always happy to welcome volunteers of all ages above 16 years so it maybe that having read this you would like to contact us about volunteering rather then receiving the service which is great!
