Care alarms

What does it do?

A care alarm is a personal alert system. It is linked to our 24 hour response centre and our team will be on hand to help in times of emergency. If you need help, simply press the button on the alarm pendant around your neck or on the unit next to the phone and we will contact you to see if everything is OK. If it isn't - or if we can't contact you - we will send someone to check. We can add additional services to your home that use the telephone to alert us if there are problems - this is known as Telecare. Check below to see what services are available. There are charges for these extra services.

Additional alarms and sensorsThe personal alarm system can be extended to include a number of additional systems at extra cost. We call these additional systems

Telecare.
Smoke detectors
If smoke is detected we will try to speak to you to find out why. If we are confident that the situation is under control we will take no further action. If we can't contact you or believe there is a fire, we will call the fire brigade and tell your next of kin or other contact.
Flood detectors
If a flood is detected we will try to speak to you to find out why. If we are confident that the situation is under control we will take no further action. If we can't contact you or believe the property may be at risk of flood we will send a mobile warden and/or contact your next of kin or other contact.
Carbon monoxide detectors
If carbon monoxide is detected we will try to speak to you. We will advise you to ventilate the property and suggest contacting Transco to check for carbon monoxide. We will also contact your next of kin or other contact. If we can't contact you and think you or the property might be at risk (a carbon monoxide detector can also be activated by fire
by-products), we will contact the fire brigade.
Natural gas detectors
If natural gas is detected we will try to speak to you. We will advise you to ventilate the property. We will also contact your next of kin or other contact. If we can't contact you and believe you or the property to be at risk, we will contact the fire brigade.
Fall detectors
If a fall is detected we will try to speak to you and ask if it is an accidental call or if you need help. If we can't contact you, we will assume that there is a problem and a mobile warden will be called to your home.
Bed/chair occupancy sensors
If a bed/chair sensor is activated we will try to speak to you to check your safety. If we can't contact you we will assume there is a problem and a mobile warden will be called to your home.
Property exit sensors
If a property exit sensor is activated we will try to speak to the occupant. If we speak to the occupant we will usually inform next of kin as well. If we can't contact the occupant we will contact next of kin to tell them that we believe their relative has left the property. We would expect the next of kin to deal with the incident from this point.
If we can't contact the next of kin, we will arrange for a mobile warden to check the property and its immediate vicinity for the occupant. If the occupant is outside the home we can not force them to return to the house, we can only suggest that they do so. For this reason, it is important that next of kin can always be contacted by telephone.
Medication reminder/dispensers
This device can help you to remember to take your medication. The device will dispense the medication into a single compartment when it needs to be taken. An alarm will sound to remind you to take your medication. If you don't take the medication within a set period of time, a call will be made to the control centre. We will try to contact you to remind you to take your medication and to check your well-being. We will then tell your next of kin. Mobile wardens cannot attend to
encourage someone to take medication.
