Residential and Respite Care
What does it do?
Adult social care in Wirral has been changing to put the people who use care services at the heart of their own care and support. This is part of the Council’s drive towards Personalisation.
Respite and care services are now provided using independent or voluntary providers, approved by the Council.
In addition to these independent providers, Girtrell Court and Sylvandale also offer in-house respite for people with learning disabilities, along with mental health respite at Fernleigh.
In addition, and as part of our efforts to broaden choice for people who use our services, an independent website, www.wirralwell.org, has been launched. Wirral Well is a one stop shop, online information resource for wellbeing, health and social care services in Wirral.
Wirral Council will continue to pay for the services that people receive, and will be responsible for making sure that they are delivered to a high standard. This will be done through contracts with approved providers.
The Council has a statutory duty to monitor standards to ensure that they are retained, and wherever possible improved. Although the services will be delivered by contractors, this duty will remain.
In its last inspection, the national care standards’ watchdog, the Care Quality Commission, rated Wirral providers highly, and concluded that the quality of care provided by our independent and voluntary sector is greater than in other areas of the North West.
