Starting Point Service
Support to get the help you need at homeWhat does it do?
Our helpful friendly staff are here to advise and support people aged 50 and over, or under 50 with a disability and their carers. We will help you access a range of services/organisations to enable you to live comfortably within your own home.
The aim of the Starting Point Plus service is to enable you to maintain your independence and make your own decisions!
We offer help with finding the following services in Wigan Borough:
• Joiners
• Social Activities - including for those with Dementia
• Toe Nail Cutting
• Plasterers
• Electricians
• Plumbers
• Gardeners and tree fellers
• Painters and decorators
• Hairdressers
• Tilers
• Landscapers
• Handypersons
This list is not exhaustive. External services are accessed through Wigan Council’s “Good Trader Scheme” and approved via Trading Standards. The Tradespeople are closely monitored for your peace of mind, and to ensure delivery of high standards of service. Many other services are available through Starting Point Plus. If you need help with something that is not listed above, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We can also signpost you to reputable Domiciliary Care Agencies to help with everyday needs such as shopping, cleaning, ironing and low level personal care. We offer a Liaison Service to discuss your needs in more detail within the comfort of your own home.
We will respond to your enquiry the same day, and services/organisations we have referred to will respond within 7 – 10 working days.
Specialist support for disabled people and their carers If you are a disabled person, our advice line can help you with a wide range of issues such as:
- Research into Funding & Grants for help with aids and adaptations etc.
- Signposting for assitance with form filling
- Self Help Groups
- Aids and adaptations
- Accessing Holidays within the UK
Our staff and volunteer advisers are trained so that they can provide reliable information and advice. A number of our volunteers are disabled themselves and have day to day challenges that disabled people face.
