The Positive Age Centre

What does it do?

The Open Age ‘Positive Age’ Centre is a low-cost activity centre for people over the age of 50, into their 90s and more. Opened in 1998, the centre is run by the people who use it, and is located on the Peabody Estate on Dalgarno Way in North Kensington. It offers a varied programme of physical, creative and mentally stimulating learning and health related activities each week. The activities support people over 50 to stay active, independent and physically and mentally fit. They encourage interaction to help reduce loneliness, isolation and depression for everyone in the local community.

Activities are developed in response to the interests of those who use the centre, and all activities are run by qualified and experienced tutors. New ideas and suggestions for the programme are welcomed by Open Age.

The centre also runs programmes to support unpaid carers who look after friends and family to have some fun, offers a ‘Link-up’ scheme to support and encourage people into activities, and advises residents about telephone-based activity groups if they are completely housebound. It also refers people to Open Age’s ‘Matrix’ accredited information, advice and guidance team if they are long-term unemployed, and they will support them back into work or training.

Open from Monday to Thursday to members (membership is free) and wheelchair accessible, the centre also provides a social-hub for older people in the area. It is used for specific programmes on Fridays, and is therefore closed to the general public on that day, and over the weekend.
