What does it do?

At Sporting Memories Clubs, people aged over 50 get together to talk about and remember all things sport.

We meet once a week or once a fortnight at venues such as sports centres, libraries or sports clubs.

About 15 people attend each Club and each session lasts for between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the Club. Sessions often start with a Club song. At every session we use our Sporting Pink publication as a starting point for that week’s sporting conversations. We often have quizzes and competitions. We share and talk about items of sporting memorabilia. We also usually do some gentle exercises, or physical games such as New Age Kurling and Boccia. We always have a tea break!

Who it is for?

We are dedicated to bringing together older adults to talk about and remember sport. We provide social and physical activities, too. At Sporting Memories Clubs, everyone finds fun, friendship and increased well-being.

The older adults who come to our Clubs may be isolated, or living with low mood, dementia or other long-term conditions. Everyone has one thing in common: a love of talking about and remembering sport! The groups are open to anyone over 50 years of age.

Where it is available?

National service (England, Scotland, Wales).

What it costs:

Our clubs are free but there may be a small charge for refreshments.

How to access or apply for it:

Some people who come to our groups have been referred by, for example, their GP, or are living with conditions such as dementia or low mood, or are isolated. However, all older sports fans are welcome! Many of our members simply enjoy the opportunity to get out of the house, meet people, enjoy good companionship, talk about the subject they love and do some gentle exercise.

You don't have to be referred. You can simply get in touch with us, using our contact form or using the details on our Club Finder pages. If you prefer, someone else can get in touch on your behalf.

What to expect then:

Until our community clubs are back up and running, we are holding Zoom Sporting Memoriesclubs which are open to everyone irrespective of age and location.

Once our groups in the community re open, just contact the project coordinator for details or simply pop into our groups.
