Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind
What does it do?
Our services include advice on a variety of topics, an activities centre, social and leisure activities, a resource centre and a residential home.
We organise a variety of social activites throughout the year, including Social Evenings.
These are held at our Mappin Street Centre on the third Thursday of every month from February to November plus 2 Christmas Socials in December. The events, which usually run from 7:30pm to 9:30pm include entertainment, a supper and a raffle. Transport is usually available on our fleet of minibuses. These evenings are very popular, usually being attended by around 100 people. There is no charge but in order to assist with catering requirements or to request transport it is necessary to book your place by contacting the Mappin Street Centre.
We usually operate 3 full day trips and many shorter local trips out every year These are either free or heavily subsidised for members and their partners or carers.
The Activities Centre is part of the facilities at our Mappin Street Centre and is a meeting place for about 50 visually impaired people each day, mostly elderly. We have a fleet of minibuses and volunteer drivers with their own cars who collect people from different parts of the city each day and bring them in to the Centre. We also have a very good snack bar in our foyer for sight impaired visitors and their gusets who might want a less formal get together. There are a range of activities and entertainment available at the Centre, including a variety of craft activities, games and word buzzles.
Refreshments are served and there is no charge for attending. A lunch, cooked in our own kitchens, is available at the subsidised price of £3.50.
There also are services to provide accessible, books, news and radios.
