Lerryn Area Minibus Association
Lerryn Area Minibus AssociationWhat does it do?
Lerryn has no public transport whatever, and the surrounding rural areas are also very poorly served. The community minibus has two main purposes:
1. To ensure that local people, especially those who do not have cars or who no longer drive, have access to local services such as shops, surgery, banks, library, solicitors, supermarkets, garden centres, dentist, hairdresser and farmers' market as well as having the opportunity to visit together some beautiful and interesting places elsewhere in the county.
2. To minimise pollution and preserve the local environment by taking one bus instead of up to 17 cars to popular local destinations.
In an isolated rural area with an ageing population, community bus trips also offer companionship; they are rarely quiet!
We are committed to providing access to all sections of the community. Our drivers are adept at folding walking trollies and collapsible wheelchairs into the boot. In addition, provided that we have advance notice, passenger seats can be removed and a ramp provided so that a passenger in a wheelchair can be safely accommodated within the bus.
The minibus is popular for hire by local organisations, including WIs, churches and theatre groups. It is also hired by private groups such as wedding parties, enabling people to celebrate without attempting to combine drinking and driving.
Lerryn Area Minibus Association (LAMA) is an entirely voluntary organisation with charitable status. Committee, drivers and fundraisers all give their services without charge in order to maintain a safe, comfortable vehicle at minimum cost to the people who use it.
Monthly timetables are displayed in public places, in local newsletters and on local community websites to make it easy for people to book in advance for trips they want to ta
