Falls Prevention Service

Falls Prevention service for older people on Isle of Wight

What does it do?

Age UK Isle of Wight recognises the seriousness, and consequences, of having a fall and the devastating effect this can have on on someone’s life. Falls and fractures in people aged 65 and over account for over 4 million hospital bed days each year in England alone.

After a fall an older person has a 50 per cent probability of having their mobility seriously impaired and a 10 per cent probability of dying within a year.  Falls destroy confidence, increase isolation and reduce independence, with around 1 in 10 older people who fall becoming afraid to leave their homes in case they fall again. Falls also have a massive impact on families, friends and carers who offer support.

As we get older the risk of falls increase -with most taking place within the home. The good news is that there are some simple changes we can make to prevent falls, which can help you feel safer and remain independent in your own home.
