Activities for older people in Colchester

What does it do?

Activ8

We all slow down as we get older but by stimulating our bodies and minds, we can lessen the effects of ageing.

To address these issues Age UK Colchester is running Activ8, a monthly activity club to provide the interest and activity to help maintain a healthy and active mind and body.

We offer activities such as games and quizzes, crafts, gentle seated exercises, reminiscing sessions, talks on relevant subjects, theatre trips, coach outings, outdoor activities and more.

Coffee mornings

Coffee or tea, with cake and biscuits, is available every Wednesday and Friday morning at Globe House between 10.00am and 12.00pm. These are 'drop-in' sessions and cost just £1 for the refreshments. Do come along and enjoy the friendship in a vibrant, sociable atmosphere.

Craft Club
On the first Tuesday of each month, 10am to 3pm, we have a drop-in Craft Club for people who would like a little company whilst indulging their talent.
A sociable setting in which to chat about crafting in general, show off your craft or help someone get started, or to learn
new crafts. No formal lessons, just crafters helping one another. Fancy crafting but don't know what? Come along to chat and get some ideas. Membership is £2 for the whole day or £1 for either the morning or the
afternoon, and includes tea or coffee and biscuits.

Family History Group

Are you researching your Family History? Or would you like to but don't know where to start? We have a social family history group on Monday afternoons between 1pm and 3pm to get people together to chat, swap notes and tips, and generally help one another, with computers available for searching the internet. Come along and join the social atmosphere and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit or three. Club fees are just £1 on the day. Computer tuition is also available to get you started if you have not used a computer before. The lessons are for one hour, on a one-to-one basis with a dedicated tutor, and cost just £5 for the session.

Knit and Natter Groups

We meet on the third Tuesday and the last Tuesday of the month from 10.00am to 12.00pm at the Age UK offices at George Street.

Some of the causes we knit for are Remeberance Poppies for the Royal British Legion, Patchwork Blankets for Disaster Relief and baby clothes for Overseas Aid, premature baby clothes and Little Angel gowns for Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford and hats, scarves, gloves for Beacon House for the Homeless in Colchester. We also knit the miniature hats for the Innocent Smoothie bottles as part of Age UK Colchester's Winter Warmth Campaign.

Refreshments are provided and membership is just £1 per session attended.

We also have a drop-in session every Wednesday at the Waiting Room (on the site of the old bus station off Queen Street) between 10am and 3pm. Come along and join us.

MEN IN SHEDS AND GARDENS

The ‘Men in Sheds’ movement began in Australia when men realised they could get together on a regular basis to take on practical tasks. This would be even better if they could have a permanent ‘workshop’ where tools or work-in-progress could be stored and skills swapped.

This format appeals to men of all ages, whether living alone or with a partner, although the majority have reached retirement age. Men are not very good at joining clubs, especially those who have been bereaved, and can easily become socially isolated. Working alongside others on practical tasks but without imposed demands can be just the right remedy. The possibility of working in a garden, again with a practical purpose such as growing vegetables or cut flowers that perhaps people on low incomes in the local community can benefit from seemed a natural add-on for those whose inclination lay that way. Having the two groups working side-by-side could open up possibilities for both sets of interests.

Men in Sheds & Gardens is currently operating from the Waiting Room (on the site of the old bus station off Queen Street) on Wednesdays between 10am and 3pm. Ee have ready made projects for you to work on or you can work on your own projects if you wish.

If you are interested in this project, or know someone who would be, either as a member or a volunteer, please contact us for more information
