The houses were designed by Augustus Pugin and the adjoining Chapel by his contemporary William Butterfield.

Each house has its own entrance, living room, kitchen, bedroom and adjoining bathroom with low or level-entry shower, gas central heating and small courtyard.
Facilities include a Communal Centre and Laundry, well maintained gardens and a private Chapel in which regular services are held by the Chaplain. The County Hospital, Arboretum Gardens, Cathedral, Castle and shops are all within easy walking distance.
