Show more "The scheme for 78 new homes close to Harrow town centre, won in competition by Harrow Churches HA with a design by TM Architects. Harrow Council sought a proposal to redevelop an existing, out-dated sheltered housing scheme and adjacent land prior to transferring ownership to HCHA.The northern part of the new building provides 56 extra-care flats – with communal facilities and support services to enable independent living – and 2 homes with separate entrances, fully adapted for younger wheelchair users. The southern part provides an adjoining, but separately-accessed, building with 20 homes for shared ownership.
The building ranges from 3 to 5 storeys in response to the steeply sloping topography of the site, incorporates different entrance levels for the extra-care and shared ownership buildings, and provides four contrasting, landscaped communal gardens. The latter each have a different character, responding to the orientation and function of the different parts of the building.
The landscape design, by Allan Pyke Associates, includes significant provision for potential flood storage, which is provided in the form of landscaped basins in two of these communal garden areas. These have a ‘riverbed’ aesthetic, and will provide visual amenity and an excellent ecological habitat, as well as the necessary flood storage volumes.
The design is contemporary but contextual, with brickwork detailing and decorative metal screens providing visual interest and variety." Show less
