Show more "This charity was founded in 1650 as The Aged Poor Society before being disbanded and reformed in 1708 to provide permanent relief to poor Catholics 'of good character'. In 2001 the name was changed to St Joseph's Society and it remains an independent charity governed by a board of Trustees. It is the oldest almshouse in the country providing accommodation specifically for Catholics of retirement age and limited means who are capable of independent living in a supported environment.

Quietly situated in Hammersmith, the 31 unfurnished flats comprise living room/kitchen area, bedroom and a shower room with lavatory and basin. There is a communal token-operated laundry and limited parking facilities. Eight flats are in the original Victorian building (pictured) built in 1851 and the remaining 23 self-contained flats are in a purpose-built 1960s block. Four flats are suitable for couples. The flats are set around a courtyard garden that provides peace and tranquillity and are centrally located within easy walking distance of shops, public transport, GP surgeries and the parish church.

Subject to Trustees' approval, residency is under a Licence to Occupy. A Maintenance Contribution is payable towards the running costs. Council Tax and utilities are the responsibility of the resident. A full-time Manager is employed on-site to handle the day-to-day running of the charity and to offer support to residents as may reasonably be required.

Eligibility Criteria
* Aged 60 years and over
* Of Roman Catholic faith
