Living at home can become harder as you get older. But choosing to move into supported living accommodation doesn't have to mean losing your independence. In fact, many of our residents tell us it feels like a new beginning.

Show more "Friars Mead is a purpose-built, 26-room residential care home operated by Abbeyfield Hertfordshire, a registered charity established in 1992. We are CQC registered and provide person-centred care for older people in a warm, homely environment with 24-hour support. Our home supports privately funded residents and those funded by the local authority.

We are well placed to support patients being discharged from the hospital who may benefit from:
Post-hospital step-down care — short-term residential support while recovering strength and confidence before returning home
Rehabilitation-focused respite — a calm, structured environment to support recovery, mobility, and daily living skills with the involvement of community therapy services
Respite care — flexible short-term stays to support individuals and their carers
Permanent residential care — for those assessed as requiring longer-term support

A number of qualities set us apart and may be of particular relevance to your discharge planning:
Staffing continuity — we have maintained very low staff turnover and have not used routine agency staffing for over two and a half years, meaning residents benefit from consistent, familiar faces from day one
Nutrition and dining — all meals are prepared and cooked on-site by our kitchen team, tailored to individual dietary needs and preferences, with a 5-star food hygiene rating (December 2025)
Digital care records — we use Person Centred Software (PCS), enabling real-time care planning and seamless clinical handover information
Medication management — robust MAR processes overseen by our in-house team with six-monthly PCN pharmacist reviews
Accessible environment — purpose-built with en-suite rooms, level garden pathways, handrails, and DDA-compliant passenger lift
Family communication — our smart care system allows families to stay connected with daily updates on their loved one’s care and activities

We are located at Rockliffe Avenue, Kings Langley, WD4 8DR — easily accessible from Watford General and Hemel Hempstead Hospital. We can typically accommodate admissions at short notice, including weekend and same-day placements where clinically appropriate.
I would welcome the opportunity to provide information packs for your ward resources or arrange for you to visit Friars Mead at a time that suits.
